It is a clever device used to push the story along while imbuing the narrative with an authentic flavour of what it would be like for an older person of modest intellect and education, and very little experience of the wide world, having to deal with the complexities of 21st century legal issues. Now I’m looking forward to reading more of hers. She knows the city and country towns and the ways of people, police, welfare workers, doctors, and the public.


He could never understand how a mother could walk away from her own children, but that’s exactly what his wife did. I will probably read more of Overington’s novels as a guilty pleasure to fill time, but I now know what to expect.

It was worth the wait. The novel has a strong factual aspect, as you would expect from an author renown for investigative journalism.

The style of writing really made the book for me. I didn’t want her telling me she hated me, not even when I knew she didn’t mean it. The story is a downward spiral for its characters, and not exactly cheery, but it keeps hooking you in.
