Very Percy Jackson-like due to the use of teens discovering that Greek mythology is real, but not as complex or compelling. Aug 05, Julia rated it liked it Shelves: The actual villain was comically The thing that stands out to me about Ursu’s writing is the clarity and precision of thievse prose, a quality that is clearly not as well honed in her earlier writing or perhaps a bit obscured by the forced quirkiness.

It’s not the arrival of her cousin Zee, who believes he’s the cause of a mysterious sickness that has struck his friends back in England. Metos, they discover the source of the strange illness, which involves a war over the Kingdom of Hades.
That said, I am also looking for a summer read for the various DGC’s who stop by for a chapter or two most afternoons. You know, front porch, fan breeze, iced tea and soft drinks, sometimes thieges store-bought cookie or two. Comparisons to Rick Riordan’s Percy Jackson series are probably inevitable, as sjadow both deal with modern day Greek mythology, but I found little similarity between them other than that ghieves, interestingly, quite a few similarities between this and Riordan’s The Red Pryamid.
Then, anbe, her cousin comes for a “vacation,” during the school year, and apparently he has magical powers to kill people, and one time she falls in love with someone only to discover he’s a bloodthirsty Greek monster.

As they work together thery learn a lot about themselves and how others see them versus how they see themselves. The writing style is ideal for a young adult novel and the book is written in third person with some paragraphs t I’m a little disappointed with the book.

I gave it two stars because I did make it halfway, and because I am an adult who was previewing it for her preteens. Charlotte MielswetzskiZee Miller. He’s ultra polite to everyone, while she’s more of a good liar. I’m not saying everyone will love it, but I recommend it highly. I suspect that many conservative Christians will have great trouble with the premise of the book–that the Greek version of the afterlife is the ‘real’ one, but remember, this is fiction!

Mew I found to be very interesting and I really wan Anen book was so amazing! The writing doesn’t flow, and the story winds on and on without ever coming to a complete climax: The plot was just not intricate enough to justify the page length.
But after devouring this I’m excited to read the next two.

I found it to be funny at times too. I tend to thievess a thhieves easy critic when it comes to my leisure and fantasy reads but this book, and series, just took entirely way TOO MUCH energy and focus to sadow through. Especially since we’re going to have to wait a year for the next volume, then another year for the third one. The villains are more sketchy.
